Hurricane Season Enters Its Final Month With a Quiet Atlantic (Fort Myers Watch News)

The Atlantic hurricane season enters its final month on Sunday. The season runs from June 1 through November 30, according to the National Hurricane Center, and the storm trackers the Weather Desk checked overnight — updated at 02:33 UTC on November 1 — listed no active tropical storm or hurricane anywhere near the United States.

It has been an exceptionally quiet year. A strong El Niño in the neighboring Pacific kept the Atlantic season unusually calm, and nine of the year's ten named storms reached only tropical storm intensity, according to The Weather Network's late-season review. By climatology, a little more than 90 percent of an average season's total activity is already behind us by the weekend before Halloween, the review noted.

Quiet is not the same as over. The most likely place for late-season formation is the western Caribbean Sea and the southwestern Atlantic, where disturbances over Central America and the remnants of cold fronts can still spin up a November storm — which is why the Weather Desk keeps its Gulf storm watch in place through November 30, and why a coast still rebuilding from Hurricane Ian does not stand down until the calendar does.
