Lee County Voters Decide Whether Only Your Own District Elects Your Commissioner

A charter amendment at the bottom of Tuesday's ballot would end countywide voting for all five county commission seats. If a majority says yes, each commissioner will be elected only by the voters of his or her district, starting in 2028.

Lee County Voters Decide Whether Only Your Own District Elects Your Commissioner (Fort Myers Watch News)

Every Lee County voter can vote for every Lee County commissioner. That is how the county's charter, adopted by voters in 1996, has worked for three decades: the five commissioners must live in the district they represent, but all five are elected at large, by the whole county. A referendum on the November 3 ballot asks voters whether to end that system.

The question, placed on the ballot under Chapter 2025-222 of the Laws of Florida, reads in part: shall the Lee County Home Rule Charter be amended so that, beginning with the 2028 general election, the Board of County Commissioners is composed of five members elected in single-member districts? A yes vote, if it carries a majority, means that from 2028 each commissioner will be chosen only by the voters who live in that commissioner's district. A no vote keeps countywide elections for all five seats.

The change would not arrive all at once. The law preserves the board's staggered four-year terms, with the terms in Districts 2 and 4 continuing until the 2030 general election, so the new system phases in across two election cycles. Supporters, including the League of Women Voters of Lee County, argue that a commissioner who answers only to one district is more accountable to it; the mechanics on the ballot, however, are the same whichever way a voter leans: majority decides, and the first single-member elections would be held in 2028. The referendum appears on every Lee County ballot, alongside a second county charter question on term limits for constitutional officers.
