When Do Clocks Fall Back? Daylight Saving Time Ends Sunday at 2 A.M., Giving Halloween Night an Extra Hour

When Do Clocks Fall Back? Daylight Saving Time Ends Sunday at 2 A.M., Giving Halloween Night an Extra Hour (Fort Myers Watch News)

Halloween night lasts an extra hour this year in Fort Myers. Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, when clocks in Florida and most of the United States turn back one hour to 1 a.m., returning to standard time. Phones and other connected devices update on their own; wall clocks, car clocks, microwaves and ovens have to be set back by hand, and the simplest move is to set them before bed on Saturday night.

The timing is a calendar rarity: Halloween falls on Saturday, October 31, and the fall-back lands a few hours later — the first time the two have coincided since 2020, and, according to the reporting read this run, the alignment will not happen again until 2037. Trick-or-treaters get the same evening as always; anyone out late, and anyone sorting candy after, gains the hour.

Whether Americans keep changing clocks at all is still an open fight in Washington. In July 2026, the US House of Representatives passed the Sunshine Protection Act by 308 votes to 117 — the bill, long associated with Florida, would make daylight saving time permanent — but the Senate left for the midterm elections without voting on it and is not due back until November 9, after this weekend's change. Hawaii and most of Arizona, which stay on standard time all year, do not take part. Under the current calendar, daylight saving time returns on Sunday, March 14, 2027.
