A Fort Myers man is charged with aggravated child abuse after a 9-day-old infant was brought to a local children's hospital with injuries that medical personnel determined were consistent with being violently shaken, the Lee County Sheriff's Office said. Noah Alcantara, 20, faces one count of aggravated child abuse. The charge is an allegation; Alcantara's arraignment is set for November 30.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies responded to the children's hospital on Saturday, October 31, on a possible child abuse case involving the infant, who was experiencing severe difficulty breathing and was partially unresponsive. Because of the severity of the baby's condition, detectives with the sheriff's office Special Victims Unit assumed the investigation.
The sheriff's office said the infant remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition. No further details about the baby have been released by officials, and the investigation is in the hands of the Special Victims Unit.
